Do your kids have favorite activities while camping?

While looking at pictures of our recent trip to the desert, I was amazed at the wide variety of things our kids did over the course of five days. Some were organized, but many were totally unstructured "in the moment" activities. There was scrambling on rocks, playing with fire, riding bikes, lots of eating, and lots and lots of running around exploring. In our family we are comfortable with a little more latitude and freedom, and the kids really seem to enjoy and thrive with the extra space.

What do your kids enjoy the most while camping or on vacation? And do you tend to give your kids a little wider leash while camping or on vacation?

  1. As a mother of 5, I've gotten creative in ways to keep kids entertained while camping. My husband and I have tried to pick campgrounds that have some access to water nearby. My kids are "waterdogs" like me, so that is a source of entertainment. Night time rituals include having board games, card games (like Phase 10), and the like to keep things quieter for the camp neighbors.
