Graffiti - arghhhh!

What bugs you more than anything else out on the trail?  Is it trash, loud groups or individuals, or cell phones in use?  Here in Boulder we can now add graffiti to that potential list of aggravators.  For the first time ever, I saw paint-pen graffiti on rocks while out hiking and running.  Not just once, but twice on different trails!  Somehow in my mind these were mutually exclusive interests.  Looks like I was wrong.

Then to really emphasize the issue, someone added their graffiti to Leave No Trace's shared office building!!!!!

On my local portion of bike path, there are a couple hundred feet where graffiti appears over every single surface you can imagine. It's a beautiful (and probably costly) bikepath, yet people feel the need to mark it and ruin it.

Keep up the good work with the blog, LNT staff, I really enjoy reading it.

I've been making a habit of bringing a can of graffiti buster (completely biodegradable) on day hikes and when out climbing. This summer I witnessed someone tagging a canyon wall with their name. The walls near the put-in are overgrown with graffiti, but this was down a ways. As we passed by on our boat and saw what was going on we went to the father of the girl who was tagging the canyon wall and were immediately rebuffed and threatened after suggesting that spray painting the rock isn't a great idea, especially considering the multitude of indian rock art in the area. We saw the same group making their mark later in the day. I went back and removed all of the "out of place" down stream grafitti, but definantly don't have the manpower or financial means to clean up near the put-in. That would likely be futile anyway.
