Rollin on a River

Since receiving a grant from the Center for Outdoor Ethics in April, Educational Recreational Adventures (ERA) has been busy with a number of environmental and outdoor education projects serving youth in the Portland area.

ERA is a nonprofit organization that offers environmental education, outdoor skills training and outdoor adventures to youth families and members of the public. ERA partners will area schools, social service agencies and governmental agencies and multicultural groups, including: Oregon Youth Conservation Corps, Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) program, Education Department of Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and Chehalem Youth and Family Services.

“Here is a photo of members of the Oregon Youth Conservation Corp (OYCC), a client of Educational Recreational Adventures, removing Scotch Broom from a field along the Willamette River, one of the conservation projects that we have been working on as a part of our "River Stewards" canoes trips. We just completed trip number 4 of 6. Each trip is three-days long and covers about 40 miles. We learn and practice "Leave No Trace" principles throughout the canoe trip and work on wildlife monitoring and removal of invasive species at selected points along the way. “—Jeffry Gottfried, Founder and Director of ERA

The River Stewards program serves at-risk youth attending alternative schools throughout Oregon. Above and beyond their traditional school studies, participating students spend time working on conservation or public service projects. This year, six OYCC students were selected to paddle approximately 40 miles down the Willamette River from Salem to St. Paul, Oregon.
