For many years it's been said to step off to the downhill side of the trail. The theory behind this is that hikers, especially with packs on, look smaller and perhaps less threatening when on the donwhill side of the trail.

While this isn't bad advice, it may not work in all situations e.g. it may simply be unsafe to step to the downhill side of the trail, there may not be enough room to accommodate your group or it may not be a durable surface.

Ideally, before doing anything, hikers are encouraged to ask the lead rider what to do. Most riders know there animals well and can tell you whether the uphill or downhill side of the trail will be best.

As with most things pertaining to "Be Considerate of Other Visitors", communication can go a long way.
