Poll Answer: Wilderness Land Management

Thanks to all those who participated in the latest poll question: WHICH FEDERAL LAND MANAGEMENT AGENCY MANAGES THE MOST FEDERALLY DESIGNATED WILDERNESS?

Answer choices included:

A. National Park Service
B. Bureau of Land Management
C. USDA Forest Service
D. US Fish and Wildlife Service

The correct answer is: A) the National Parks Service (NPS). The NPS manages
43,890,517 acres of federally designated Wilderness.

*Note: we had previously posted that the Bureau of Land Management manages the most, however, this
is incorrect.

Actually, the USFS and BLM disagree with you.

According to the BLM, it manages 8.6 million acres in 222 designated wilderness areas.

The entire federal Wilderness protection system comprises over 107 million acres, the bulk of which is managed by the US Forest Service.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your comment, and for bringing our attention to this discrepancy. While the BLM manages the most land, the National Parks Service actually manages the most federally designated Wilderness.

Thanks again!
