Webelos Woods “Delivering the Promise”, Oct 2-4 2009 at Double V Scout Ranch Tucson Arizona

Recently, former Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainer, Tanya Rich, attend a major scouting event to talk to youth about the importance of practicing Leave No Trace.

(from Tanya) I was thrilled to head out to the Double V Scout Ranch for a morning event at the Webelos Woods. For one weekend, the young men and women get to experience what scouting has to offer them. Young women!?! Yes, the Webelos Woods has added two new programs the Junior and Cadette Girl Scouts from the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council.

The girl and boy scouts started their morning off with the flag ceremony. Then spilt by units and went to their eight chosen scout craft skill classes. One of those skill classes was the Leave No Trace booth where we played the game “ How Long Does it Last”, the students and I discussed decomposition rates and why it’s important for us to trash our trash or dispose of our waste properly. The individual units enjoyed guessing how long it takes plastic or glass to decompose. Surprisingly the scouts learned that glass never breaks down. This taught them the importance of picking up or packing out all trash when recreating outdoors. Thanks Webelos Woods for a great weekend! www.webeloswoods.org

Thank you Tanya for volunteering to take part in this event!
