Last week I attended a regional meeting for "National Get Outdoors Day" 2009. Last May, Denver received news that it was one of the chosen sites for this June celebration.
A lot of hard work and quick planning on the part of the Regional Forest Service, Denver Parks and Recreation Department, REI and other metro area nonprofits resulted in a successful event at Sloan's Lake Park with over 1000 participants. In 2009, Denver has once again received recognition as one of the 20+ event sites across the country.
This year's event, in Denver City Park, should be nothing short of fun and exciting for kids. Activities will include: fishing, climbing, mountain biking, arts and crafts, gardening, Junior Ranger Camp, Outdoor Survival 101 and, of course, how to Leave No Trace in the outdoors! In addition, donated gear and giveaways will allow children and families to continue exploring the outdoors after the event. The planning committee is anticipating over 5000 participants.
