Partner Highlight: Kathryn Beals

Discovering the art of Kathryn Beals, Small Business Partner of Leave No Trace. [Submitted by Kathryn Beals.]

Ba
ckground: I grew up in a small fishing town on the northwest coast of British Columbia. As a kid, my parents took me camping frequently and taught me to love the outdoors. I met my husband Travis ten years ago and we moved to California in 2003. We are both long time promoters of Leave No Trace ethics and have lead backpacking trips in the Sierras and Rockies. In 2008, we hiked the West Coast Trail of Vancouver Island and the high Sierra section of the PCT. The places we see on our treks provide the inspiration for my paintings.

What is your motto? I don't have a motto, but I always strive to communicate my love of the backcountry in my work. In my paintings, I try to balance the look of a favorite place with the feeling of being there. Tents are a focal point in many of my paintings because I want to give the viewer an emotional and symbolic connection to the landscape. As an artist specializing in commissioned paintings, I try to get a sense of the story behind each photograph so I can help people capture the memory of special places.

What does your company do for th
e environment? I select eco-friendly materials and methods in all aspects of my business. I paint with acrylic paints, which do not require the use of toxic solvents, as oil paints do. I use sustainable packaging materials whenever possible when shipping my paintings. My art cards are printed on 100% recycled paper with vegetable inks.

Wh
at does your company do for the community? I donate spare art supplies to local public schools, and I donate paintings and gift certificates to local animal shelters. I also run an art technique blog, howipaint.com, featuring some of my current paintings in progress with advice and instructional videos for beginners. I am a self-taught artist and I hope to inspire and encourage people of all ages to learn to paint.

W
hy does your company partner with Leave No Trace? (Why we love you.) It is a privilege to work with Leave No Trace, since I have long supported their approach to wilderness preservation through access and education. I donate 10% of profits from my card sales to Leave No Trace. I hope that my paintings can inspire people to visit the backcountry and have the experiences that have taught my me why Leave No Trace ethics are so important. Having grown up camping, my husband and I are glad to say that trails are cleaner now than we remember as kids. We believe that Leave No Trace is responsible for this improvement and we want to do our part to help.

We all have a little magic wand.

You know you’re in a uniquely lucky situation as a development professional when your donors begin to send trend reports and financial forecasts to your email account. Like fairy godmothers of Grimm, they mix caution with foretelling, but never without a level of optimism and incitement for the work that you do. It’s a beautiful rapport and one that I’m continually amazed by in the midst of our country’s economic struggle.

Yesterday, a long-time supporter of the organization emailed me an article with the good-humored note: “Something for you to digest… slowly.” The author who wrote this article in Wednesday’s Wall Street Journal has a double shift job as a diviner of doom. Titled “Next Benefit to Face the Ax: Matching Gifts”, I could hear my comrades in development across the nation shriveling like the Wicked Witch of the West in water.

Okay, not really. For the record, I think anyone who devotes his or her life to working for a cause is not that easily deterred. However, this is understatedly unfortunate. I could embrace the woes and moans of how this will hurt the overall financial picture of every nonprofit in the nation that benefits from the near $1 billion dolled out in matching-gifts from corporations each year, but the author has already gone there. It's an interesting topic, and I suggest you read the article.

Instead, what I’d like to stress – as a donor to many organizations myself – are two things. First, what a privilege it is to have a matching gift program in the first place. Without a doubt, this is one of the easiest ways to increase the power of your donation, regardless if your company matches 50 cents or $1 to every dollar donated. Take advantage of it if you can! You can always ask your Human Resources Department for the details of your company's program.

Second, and more importantly, do not ever undervalue your contribution or yourself as a donor. Times are decidedly difficult for the vast majority of Americans and other global citizens, but if we convince ourselves that not giving at all is more honorable than giving something – be it a lesser donation – then we have another thing coming to humanity. People and Community are the solution to so many of the world’s issues. We are in such a primed position to take the reins of this world and guide it where we want to go, and as unfortunate as it is that this period had to coincide with one of the hardest economic downturns in history, we all have much to be thankful for, the very least of which is our capacity to empower and change.

A dollar is a dollar, but it’s better than none. An hour volunteered is just an hour, but it sure yields a result you can see. No matter how much or in what capacity you give, you are someone’s fairy godmother, too. Even when times are tough, you can make dreams a reality.

A very special thank you to all of our incredible donors and volunteers, who made 2008 such an exciting and successful year. We look forward to sharing the upcoming year with you!

Calling all Front Range residents!

We are so excited to participate in a giftwrapping fundraiser on Wednesday, December 19 from 5-9pm at the REI Boulder store (1789 28th St., Boulder, CO 80301). All donations from our fabulous gift wrapping will go directly to Leave No Trace.

In keeping with the Leave No Trace mission, we'd like to use 100% recycled materials to wrap the purchases of REI customers. We need your help to collect these materials!

Suggested materials include the following:
-Newspaper
-Webbing
-Rope
-Fabric
-Yarn
-Recycled bows
-Recycled gift bags

We are also in need of tape donations.

You can drop off your donations anytime at the Leave No Trace office (1830 17th ST., Suite 100, Boulder, CO 80302). Feel free to leave your recycled materials on the porch after regular business hours.

Another way to support the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics is to stop by REI Boulder, do a little holiday shopping and have the lovely Leave No Trace staff wrap your gifts!  We always love the opportunity to meet folks supporting Leave No Trace in our own hometown.

Thank you for your support!
