Homage To Our Friends at KEEN Footwear

Since 2005, KEEN Footwear has played an integral role in the Center’s work to build a constellation of American communities dedicated teaching and spreading Leave No Trace. It all began with a KEEN-funded partnership that flooded Leave No Trace’s State Advocate program (the organization’s regional grassroots activists) with support, training, scholarships and educational tools. This did the quick work of solidifying a network of steadfast volunteers around the country.
The people of the Hybird.Care Program at KEEN Footwear did what few funders understand — they supported infrastructure to get these programs off the ground. They asked what it would take to build a mission-driven community from the ground up and recognized that what we proposed would take time to develop. As a result, KEEN-funded programs have impacted hundreds of thousands of people and have helped spread Leave No Trace to communities around the country.
After six years of funding, we are at a critical turning point. With a half-year dedicated to listening to Leave No Trace constituents and key stakeholders about Leave No Trace’s strategic direction, we are carrying all of the work that KEEN Footwear supplied into the next phase of Leave No Trace work. The Leave No Trace identified three critical issues that Leave No Trace should dedicate its future to — Again and again, we heard “focus locally and engage kids, close-to-home.
Thanks to KEEN Hybrid.Care, we’re ready. Because of years of generous support from KEEN, we are wholly poised to step up to this next phase. Check out Keen Footwear at: http://www.keenfootwear.com/default.aspx

Dear Education Department: Activate, Volunteer, Advocate
Dear Education Department,
I recently visited your organization’s website and remember hearing about the Leave No Trace principles years ago at summer camp. Anyway, I am very interested in what you do and would like to get involved. I was wondering if there are any volunteer opportunities? I do not live in Colorado so I was looking for something that I could get involved with more locally.
Thanks for your help,
Enthusiastic Volunteer
Dear Enthusiastic Volunteer,
Thank you for your email! We love hearing about people getting involved in their local communities. The Leave No Trace program relies heavily on volunteers—conducting workshops, attending outdoor events, doing school presentations and setting up informational booths. Here are some tips for ways that you can get involved with Leave No Trace as a volunteer:
1) Contact your State Advocate. Their information is available on the state Community Pages. Often Advocates receive multiple event requests at a time and could use the help of extra volunteers.
2) Get involved with the Leave No Trace Hot Spot program. The program is aimed at improving the condition of a designated “Hot Spot” or recreational area that is experiencing multiple visitor created impacts. The current site the Center is working on is the Red River Gorge in eastern Kentucky. More sites will be determined in the coming year and a list of all other Hot Spot applicants will be listed on the Hot Spot page with contact information on how to get involved.
3) Get involved in national initiatives/events. An example is National Get Outdoors Day on June 12, 2010, an event aimed at getting kids and families outdoors by introducing them to local resources and providing a host of hands on activities to teach them about outdoor recreation how to care for our natural resources. Many metropolitan areas around the country will be celebrating this event and all are looking for volunteers.
4) Take part in our Bigfoot Challenge. One of our most recent Challenges is a PEAK and Teen Activity Submission Contest. If you are an educator that has a great idea for teaching kids about Leave No Trace submit your activity. See the side bar for details.
5) Finally, stay tuned for our upcoming volunteer registry. We will now have a way for folks to express their interest in volunteers and get them connected with each other and with local events.
Thanks for all your support!
Sincerely,
Education Department

My Backyard: Creative support goes a long way.
We’re always thrilled to hear of the innovative ways our members, partners, and volunteers raise money for the Center.
Most recently, we’ve learned of a film festival hosted by Colorado State University’s Warner College of Natural Resources that will benefit the Center. The films will feature various adventure, humanitarian and sustainability themes and all proceeds from the event go to the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.
Additionally, we recently learned of a volunteer that created a Birthday Wish on Facebook to benefit Leave No Trace. She has set a goal to raise $370 for the Center, and from now until April 20, 2010, she will be asking her friends to donate as a birthday present.
The are innumerable ways to support the Center beyond membership. Got the creative itch to fund raise? Go for it! Your support of the Center helps fund new educational materials and initiatives, as well as scholarship and grant opportunities for communities nationwide. Thank you for your support!
Partnership Highlight: KEEN and Leave No Trace
KEEN’s Hybrid.Care steps into the International Community with Leave No Trace
For the sixth year, KEEN Footwear’s Hybrid.Care program has extended major support for Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics’ work to build community networks and state-by-state advocacy. KEEN signed on in 1995 to help build Leave No Trace’s State Advocate Program. Since, KEEN has not only supported the volunteer State Advocates but has played a primary role in Leave No Trace’s successful work to build communities of educators and activists around the country.
This year, KEEN not only extends support for community networks but is also helping Leave No Trace develop its first international pieces to support the Center’s growing need for global education. Thank you, KEEN.

Leave No Trace Member Teaches A Camper's Oath in Delaware

One of the best parts of my work day is gettingn to hear from active Leave No Trace members and educators about the positive ways in which they are enacting change in their communities. It reminds me that Leave No Trace is a movement that exists beyond the walls of my office... an action-oriented and people-focused community that is growing by the minute.
This week, active Leave No Trace member and educator, Gary Lehr, was kind enough to send along the following article that was published in the Wilmington, DE News Journal. In addition to highlighting a recent, successful Trainer Course, it is also a great reference article on basic Leave No Trace principles and practices. You can read the full article, "A camper's oath: Do no harm," on The News Journal's website.
If you know of other exciting Leave No Trace events, or stories, or if you've seen Leave No Trace in the news, don't hesitate to let us know! Let's celebrate each other's successes, and our combined positive effect to increase Leave No Trace awareness around the world.

Do Your Friends Have The Power To Make You Leave No Trace?

On Sunday, I read with great interest, an article in the New York Times magazine about the emerging science of social contagion. You may have heard about some of this research in the last year that attempts to scientifically determining whether happiness is catching or if your friends are making you fat. The article by Clive Thompson is at the following link:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/13/magazine/13contagion-t.html
For me, it evoked many questions we ask around here about the power and cumulative impact of community. The Center has spent substantive resources investing in the concept that Leave No Trace can be a social movement of people working in their communities to spread environmental education that directly impacts their own city parks, their rivers, their trails, their personal health.
Our actions speak to it. We give our support locally, to people and projects that effect single communities. We support state-by-state volunteer coordinators. Our Traveling Trainers move, community-to-community, teaching Leave No Trace in elementary schools, city parks and youth centers.
We like to think of Leave No Trace as a grassroots education as much as a nationally mandated environmental campaign.
Is it working?
What else could we be doing to influence and inspire people in their communities to Leave No Trace?

Volunteerism on the Trail
There's plenty of heavy lifting to do, and the American Hiking Society's Volunteer Vacations links people of all abilities with projects nationwide. You can help clear fallen trees in the Ozarks, build a rock turnpike over a bog in Idaho's White Cloud Mountains, or cut new paths in California's fire-damaged Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. But trail advocates encourage new volunteers to start locally. Even picking up litter along a stretch of a favorite trail nearby helps keep the trail movement strong.
Volunteer
• Check with hiking clubs or environmental groups about opportunities to work on trails.
Write Congress
• Funding is tight for the growing system of trails. Remind elected officials that trails promote health and in many places offer "green" alternative commuter routes.
Donate
• Trail advocates advise giving to nonprofit "friends of the trail" groups that have adopted a trail.

All We Need Is You

Three years go, the powers that be from Keen Footwear, a growing West coast shoe company, had an epiphany after listening to a story about the tsunami’s devastation. In its wake, Keen funneled its entire 2005 print advertising budget into a foundation and gave that money, to a handful of nonprofit organizations, Leave No Trace being one of them. Since, Keen has distributed over a million dollars to environmental and social organizations and Leave No Trace has been on the receiving end of tangible funds to help our volunteers on the ground and build local support for the Leave No Trace program.
In three years, we’ve been able to give thousands of dollars and resources to Leave No Trace state advocates, build a new training grants program, distribute about 150,000 Leave No Trace educational pieces in communities like yours, and develop tools, such as the Community section on the Leave No Trace website, to support local advocacy.
Now, all we need it you. Get involved in three ways:
Get Involved: #1
Our latest is the new Community page at www.LNT.org. Click into your state and find events, training, education, volunteers, partners and learn more about your state advocate. Contact us to be added to the list if you are a Master Educator or Trainer who feel that you can make a difference. If you are conducting any sort of Leave No Trace training or workshop, let us, and everyone in your state, know about it by listing it on the Community page.
Get Involved: #2
Email the office if you would like to be put onto your state’s Volunteer Registry. We are collecting the names of people who can help at events or training sessions. Even if you only have a couple of hours, this is a great way to get involved.
Get Involved: #3
Another tool on this page is the Leave No Trace Community Blog. When you read something that interests you, add a quick comment to the blog or, better yet, contact us if you would like to contribute as a guest blogger. Make a New Years Resolution to add your voice and perspectives to the Leave No Trace community.
